Sometimes when I scan these slides I get a pleasant surprise. A place I had forgotten I'd been, a bus I'd forgotten I'd captured. But sometimes there is something else in the image that is of greater interest now than when I took the picture.

This is one such of the last-named. This picture, and some to follow, from the North-East of England, were captured during a bus-photographing cycle tour of the area I undertook just after I qualified as a doctor in 1980, and just before I started work on 1st August 1980. I set off to see a bit of the country in general and buses in particular. So here on the left we have GBB 523K, a Tyne and Wear PTE Leyland Atlantean PDR2/1 with Alexander body, dual doors and nearside staircase.

The reason the apparent subject is so far to one s ide of the frame is that on the right we have the very bicycle upon which I undertook the tour. I was totally unaware that I had any pictures of this bike. This image has been framed so as to capture it, so I must have set this up deliberately, and I am now very glad that I did.

For those of you of a cycling persuasion, this is a no-name frame with 10 speed Suntour transmission and Weimann brakes. Thinking about that old bike now reminds me how much progress there has been over the years in cycle equipment. That old thing had a total of 10 speeds. Our current tandem has 30, with indexed levers so that one can accurately change gear. The black tourer weighed a ton; the tandem, being a tandem, is not exactly silthe-like but is tricked out with various bits of titanium and carbon. The Weimann brakes on the black bike were a b@st@rd to adjust, and had only nominal stopping ability in the dry, and none at all in the wet; the tandem has a massive hydraulic rear disc which can bring the whole laden machine to a stop safely and switftly in all weathers.

I rode my new bike to work today. It wasn't the first ride, but it was the first commuting ride. I spent a little time making a few tweaks to the gears and brakes. A customer had stopped by to chat and see the shop, and we both noted about how good the color looked in the sun. He commented that I should take a picture of it "in this light". I was already reaching for my camera when he said it. The first shot was pretty over exposed, so I adjusted a shutter time and got this one after a little cropping.
